CHENNAI: A fetish for trendy number plates can invite trouble from the city traffic police.
Some time ago, the department urged motorists to comply with sections 50 and 51 of Central Motor Vehicle (CMV) Rules of 1989 and set November 15 as the deadline. Drivers who do not comply with stipulations for number plates are liable to be prosecuted as per CMV rules, states a Police department press release. Between Wednesday and Friday, the police booked 1,750 cases for improper number plates.
"The errant motorists have been given a month's grace time to rectify their number plates," said Letika Saran, Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai.
Using Tamil letters on number plates is not allowed according to rules, the Police Commissioner said. However, the concern is more about size, thickness and space between the letters than language.
