Leaking roof, clogged drains, puddles and a slushy parking area greeted Mangalore City South MLA J.R. Lobo at the Kankanady market building on Wednesday. Mr. Lobo visited the market following complaints from traders that the Mangalore City Corporation had failed to maintain it.
Mr. Lobo found traders selling fish and vegetables together. He instructed the officials to ensure that fish and vegetables are sold separately. Women selling fish complained that they do not have seating facility. A fisherwoman said they did not mind paying more rent but wanted good amenities.
Mr. Lobo later told presspersons that the old market building would be given a facelift at the moment. A plan would be in place in two months to build a new market there, he said.
He said that new markets would be built at Kadri, Urwa Market and Central Market as well.
Vasanth, a trader, complained that cement coating of the roof was coming off at two places. Another trader Dheeraj said the main problem of traders was that the contractor chosen for maintaining the cleanliness was not doing his duty properly.
Some vegetable sellers complained that as there was an outlet of the Dakshina Kannada Horticulture Producers’ Cooperative Marketing Society (DK Hopcoms) on the main road at Kankanady, people were buying vegetables there and the traders were not getting any business. Mr. Lobo instructed the city corporation officials to shift the outlet of the DK Hopcoms to the market premises in order to guarantee a level-playing field. Mr. Lobo instructed the contractor to clean the drains using sucking machines and to maintain the cleanliness properly. The MLA instructed the Superintending Engineer of the MCC to ensure that leaking on the roofs was plugged at the earliest.
