Bengal coach W.V. Raman almost lost his right index finger in a freak accident during the team’s training on Saturday morning at the Pankaj Gupta indoor nets.
Raman, who was standing at the bowling end, held on to the net with his right hand with the index finger jutting out.
Two huge pedestal fans had been placed just outside the net for the benefit of the players.
As he walked up and down talking to the boys, he inadvertently took a step back and his index finger came into contact with the fan’s blade.
This resulted in severe injury to the finger. Players and support staff rushed him to a hospital.
Doctors operated upon the injured finger to set right the bone dislocation.
A plastic surgeon will have to reconstruct the mangled finger in the next few days.
Team sources said the coach would be able to accompany the team to Rajkot for the N.K.P. Salve Challenger Trophy beginning later this month. — Special Correspondent
