MUMBAI: Western Railway (WR) thrashed Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) 6-1, Bharat Petroleum ended Hockey Bandra's dream run, scoring a 3-1 win and Bhopal XI prevailed over Chandigarh XI 7-5 in the pre-quarterfinals of the 44th Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra Stadium here on Thursday.

WR took a hit as early in the sixth minute when PSEB's S. Kuljit made a successful try.

But K. Chandrakesh's shot past the goalkeeper in the closing minutes of the first half, and a ten-minute breather rejuvenated WR's spirits and the team returned to the field all pumped up.

In a little under 25 minutes, WR scored five goals, three from penalty corners. Full back Amarjeet converted two short corners and Chandrakesh scored his team's sixth, six minutes from time. Hardeep Singh and Shakthi Thakur got the other two in between.

Len Aiyappa starred in Bharat Petroleum's 3-1 rout of Hockey Bandra with two good attempts.

Earlier, Bhopal XI and Chandigarh XI played out a see saw battle in sweltering conditions. The former eked out a 7-5 win after they were tied 2-2 at regulation time. Special Correspondent
