in ‘bowl-out’

Bangalore’s VSL defeated Thiruvananthapuram’s State Bank of Travancore 1-0 by the bowl-out method after rain spoiled their quarterfinal in the Royal Projects 63rd Pooja all-India cricket tournament at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Tuesday.

The SBT, put in to bat, had made 87 for two in 16 overs when rain halted play.

With no play possible after that, a bowl-out (five players from each side bowl at unguarded stumps) was resorted to, to pick the winner.

VSL won the contest 1-0 and entered the semifinal.

Easy win for IPO ‘B’

IPO ‘B’ defeated Pataudi CC by 47 runs in the Kollam district ‘A’ division cricket league at the DB College ground here on Tuesday.

At Ashramam maidan, the match between Genuine CC and Zones CC ended in a tie.

IPO ‘B’ 179 in 34.3 overs (Sreeraj 77, Sarathraj 43, Anu Babu three for 31) bt Pataudi CC 132 in 29.1 overs (Anu Babu 35, Jiji Sathyan four for 21, S. Syam four for 34).

Genuine CC 150 for eight in 30 overs (Shan 50, Jishnu 32) bt Zones CC 150 for nine in 30 overs (Gineesh 60, Sarathdev three for 32).

Palakkad takes lead

Palakkad took the lead at the end of the second day’s proceedings in the State School Games (Group II) events here on Tuesday.

The host, with a good showing in the senior section, wrested the lead from overnight leader Thiruvananthapuram and led with 56 points.

Thiruvananthapuram was in second spot with 46 followed by Wayanad with 36.

Palakkad’s success came from kho kho as it triumphed in both sections. Kannur took the title in senior girls’ basketball, while Kollam girls won the senior hockey title.

Thiruvananthapuram boys won the basketball title, and Wayanad girls won the table tennis event in the senior category.

Kerala blanks Sikkim, enters quarterfinals

Kerala blanked Sikkim 4-0 for its third win in its group (Cluster V) and entered the quarterfinals of the National under-14 football championship at Kalyani, West Bengal, on Tuesday.

K.P. Rahul struck twice (55th and 72nd{+.}) while Ajin Tom (fourth) and A.S. Adarsh (49th) scored one each in Kerala’s win.

Kerala had thrashed Madhya Pradesh 4-1 and Himachal Pradesh 8-0 earlier.

Inter-dist. football

The 50th Kerala State senior inter-district football championship will be held in a knockout format at Arappatta in Wayanad from November 24 to December 2.

Football trials

The trials to select the Ernakulam district senior football team for the forthcoming State championship will be held at the Panampilly Nagar Sports Academy ground at 8 a.m. on Nov. 16.

Inter-collegiate basketball

Carmel Club’s all-India inter-collegiate basketball tournament for men and women will be held at the Carmel Stadium in Aluva from January 27 to February 2 2014.
