Brendon McCullum’s explosive half-century, an unbeaten 39-ball 67, guided Otago Volts to a five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last qualifier of the Champions League T20 at the PCA Stadium here on Friday.
Irrespective of this result, SRH, which has eight points in the qualifying stage, will play in Group B, while Volts (with 12 points from three wins) will feature in Group A.
SRH will meet Trinidad and Tobago here, while Volts will face Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad in their first group outings.
Volts elected to field and off-spinner Nathan McCullum — who opened the bowling — dealt a double blow early in the SRH innings.
He bowled a tight line to scalp the opening duo of Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan in back-to-back overs.
Soon, Nick Beard picked up the wicket of Biplab Samantray. Showing his presence of mind, Michael Bracewell caught the ball on the edge of the long-on boundary, threw it high and stepped inside the rope to complete a spectacular catch.
It was a perfect test for the SRH middle order. J.P. Duminy (57 n.o. off 38 balls), Cameron White (25 off 23) and Darren Sammy (26 off 22) rose to the occasion to take the team to 143 for five.
In reply, Volts, powered by Brendon McCullum’s knock studded with five fours and an equal number of sixes, reached the winning total with a lot to spare. — Y.B. Sarangi
