Chennai: Tamil Nadu defeated Sourashtra by 52 runs in the final of the eighth BVCI National veteran's championship, here, on Monday, at the Mayajaal ground. Pursuing Tamil Nadu's 214 for six, Sourashtra finished at 162 for eight in 30 overs.

S. Shivakumar emerged the hero for Tamil Nadu after Sourashtra elected to field. The opener raced to 100 off only 79 balls, striking three sixes and eleven fours.

Shivakumar and K. Srinivasan rattled up 86 runs in only 9.3 overs for the second wicket. The stand provided Tamil Nadu the momentum in a match reduced from 40 to 30 overs due to inclement weather.

Srinivasan scored a breezy 31-ball 49 (9x4, 1x6). For Sourashtra, N. Mohammad and S. Pillai picked up two wickets each.

Early trouble

Soursathra stumbled early on in its chase and never really recovered. Only Bimal Jadeja (31) offered a measure of resistance. Left-arm spinner S. Srikrishna, with three for 17, emerged the most successful bowler for Tamil Nadu. Leg-spinner P.R. Venkatsubramanian and offie K. Srinivasan claimed two wickets apiece.

National Selector V.B. Chandrasekhar inaugurated the match. The BVCI president Chetan Chauhan gave away the prizes.

Tamil Nadu swept the awards with R. Venkatesh (best batsman of the tournament), S. Sri Krishna (best bowler), P.R. Venkatsubramanian (best all-rounder), and S. Shivakumar (man of the final) bagging the top prizes.
