South United Football Club (SUFC) closed in on current leader HASC with a thumping 7-0 defeat of Students Union in the Super Division league at the football stadium here on Friday.
By virtue of this big win SUFC strengthened its goal difference and in case HASC drops points to KSP on Saturday and SUFC wins against MEG on Sunday then the newly-inducted team will be crowned champion. HASC thus plays a must-win match tomorrow.
SUFC has 20 points with a match in hand while HASC is on top of the heap with 22 points, also with a match in hand.
After a barren first half SUFC got a lease of life thanks to a self goal and then the floodgates opened with Amos (2), Gopi, Vignesh, Stephen and Solamani adding to the tally.
Earlier, last year’s champion BEML-KGF Academy completed its league engagements with a 4-2 victory over bottom placed DYSS and finished in the fifth slot with 15 points.
Rajesh and Sanoj both netted twice while Karthik and Karan struck for the Hostelites, who finished without a point.
