KOCHI: Thrissur defeated Palakkad 2-1 and entered the women's final of the K.C.M. Mather Kerala State inter-district tennis championship at the Regional Sports Centre here on Saturday.

The results: Men's quarterfinals: Thrissur bt Palakkad 2-0; Ernakulam bt Malappuram 2-0. Under-18 boys semifinals: Thiruvananthapuram bt Palakkad 2-0. Women's semifinals: Thrissur bt Palakkad 2-1. Under-18 girls semifinals: Palakkad bt Thiruvananthapuram 2-0 .

KCA in trouble

KCA XI was in dire straits against South Zone in the Under-19 inter-zone cricket match at the Medical College ground, Thiruvananthapuram, on Saturday.

After conceding a first innings lead of 55, KCA XI was struggling at 92 for six at stumps on the second day. Earlier, Abhishek Mohan (63) and V.S. Ranjith (45) made significant contributions as South Zone scored 226 in its first innings.

At the Agriculture College ground, Central Zone was in command against North Zone. After taking a crucial first innings lead of 85 runs, Central Zone ended the day at 234 for five.

The scores: KCA XI 171 and 92 for six in 39 overs v South Zone 226 in 60 overs (Abhishek Mohan 63, R.S. Ranjith 45, Vishnudas three for 25).

Central Zone 264 and 234 for five in 49 overs (Nikhliesh 62, V.M. Vinod 45, Rohit 43) v North Zone 179 in 42 overs (Ahmed Faizeen 44, Krishna Kumar four for 35).

Basketball coaching

The weekend basketball coaching camp organised by YMCA Tiruvalla was inaugurated by the YMCA president Cherian Polachirackal at the Public stadium, Tiruvalla, on Saturday.

Nithin Paul Stephen, who was chosen as the best player in the recently concluded Junior State championships, was felicitated by the YMCA. Nithin learnt his first lessons in basketball from the YMCA courts before making his mark at the bigger stage.
