Seventeen-year-old V. Jyothi Surekha pipped P. Lily Chanu 143-141 to win the women’s compound title in the National-ranking archery tournament 2013 at the Yamuna Sports Complex here on Sunday.
The talented archer from Andhra Pradesh recorded comprehensive victories over S. Jayalakshmi 146-138 in the quarterfinals and Manjudha Soy 142-133 in the semifinals.
In the summit clash, Surekha started off with two 10s to take a two-point lead in the first set (29-27). Lily gave a close fight in the remaining four sets, but Surekha kept her cool to emerge winner. This was her fourth NRAT crown of 2013 after registering wins in the Hyderabad, Delhi and Aurangabad legs. Incidentally, this event could not be held last year due to a cramped schedule.
“I have been shooting well,” said the first year engineering student from Vijayawada. “I have to keep doing well in the run-up to the Asian Games this year,” said Surekha, who won two bronze medals in the team events of the World junior championships last year.
