CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu had a disappointing opening day at the all-India Krishna Khaitan Memorial badminton tournament as 15 of its players bowed out of the singles competition here on Friday.

B. Ashok went down 21-16, 21-12 in the first round to top seed B. Sumeet Reddy of Andhra Pradesh in the boys’ under-19 singles.

Competing in two age categories, P. Kanthi Visalakshi won her match in the girls’ under-16 singles against Reshma Karthik of Karnataka, but lost to fourth-seeded D. Sudha Kalyani of Andhra Pradesh in the next round. Visalakshi later retired from her opening under-19 singles match against seventh seed Gauri Ghate of Maharashtra after losing the first game 21-10.

Girls’ under-19 top seed, Air India’s Anuradha Shrikhande, had an easy opener, winning in two quick games against Maharashtra’s Saee Purandare.
