NEW DELHI: Sultan Ansari hit an unbeaten 92 off 74 balls with 10 fours and a six as Vidhya Jain Academy recorded a thrilling four-run victory over Food Corporation of India (FCI) in the pre-quarterfinals of the 37th Goswami Ganesh Dutt memorial cricket tournament at the St. Stephen's College ground on Saturday.
Asked to bat, Vidhya Jain made 261, thanks to some good knocks by Karan Negi and Prateek Suneja who helped the team consolidate on the fine foundation provided by Ansari.
In reply, FCI finished with 257 for seven. Needing eight for victory in the final over, it could muster only three runs off the last over bowled by skipper Naresh Jain. The team had done well to score 10 off the penultimate over, but lost its way in the final over.
Lokesh Sharma's fluent 94, studded with seven fours and two sixes, and Umang Sharma and Rajinder Bisht's knocks proved inadequate for FCI.
The scores: Vidhya Jain Academy 261 for five in 40 overs (Sultan Ansari 92 n.o., Karan Negi 42, Prateek Suneja 41 n.o., Joginder Singh 25) bt FCI 257 for seven in 40 overs (Lokesh Sharma 94, Umang Sharma 47, Rajinder Bisht 39, Paras Dogra 37) .
