BANGALORE: The 23rd Sub-junior National aquatics championship will get underway at the State-of Art swim complex on June 18 at the Jain International Residential School, about 40 kms away from Bangalore. About 600 contestants from 24 States will participate in the championship which comprises swimming events in Group III and IV for boys and girls and diving events in Group I, II and 111.

Traditionally Maharashtra, the reigning overall champion, had always dominated the sub-junior championship, but this time around, the favourite is likely to run into stiff competition from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Bengal.

The Karnataka Swimming Association, which is conducting the Nationals in the State for the fourth time, has made elaborate arrangements for smooth running of the meet. The main issue for KSA, is the logistics of transporting teams to JIRS complex from the City and according to T.D. Vijayarghavan, secretary of the KSA, a regular shuttle service will be in place for the teams to reach and return from the venue on time. JIRS on its part, would provide boarding and lodging facilities for all the teams. Besides JIRS, the other major sponsors are Baldota Group of companies and Canara Bank.

Neelkant Rao Jagdale, the president of KSA, said the lack of sponsors have hampered the growth of aquatics in the state and country "it is woefully lacking", said Mr. Jagdale, making a pitch for more corporate involvement in aquatics.
