Around 500 children from 200 schools from nine States and two countries — Bangladesh and Nepal — will participate in The Telegraph schools' chess championship to be held at the Alekhine Chess Club from November 29 to December 7.

The FIDE-rated schools' chess tournament will have more than 100 rated players vying for honours. Some of the notable names are Sayantan Das, former World under-12 champion and the winner for the last two years, Diptayan Ghosh, former Asian under-10 and under-12 champion, and Mitrabha Guha, former Asian under-8 champion.

The total prize money is Rs. 1,20,000 and there will also be several age group prizes.

Odafa stars for Bagan

Two injury-time goals from striker Okolie Odafa helped Mohun Bagan beat BNR Club 2-1 in a championship leg encounter of the Calcutta Football League's premier division here on Monday.

Trailing through BNR striker Prasenjit Pandit's 57th minute goal, Bagan was staring at defeat before Odafa came to its rescue with two quick goals in the six minutes of injury time.

Odafa equalised in the 92nd minute before scoring the winner three minutes later off a brilliant solo effort. — Principal Correspondent
