Thiruvananthapuram: A fine spell by medium pacer Sreeraj enabled South Zone restrict KCA XI to 171 on the first day of the State under-19 inter-zonal cricket match at the Medical College ground here on Friday.

Ajayakumar (59) and Akshay Kodoth (40) offered some resistance but the rest of the batsmen came a cropper against Sreeraj.

In reply, South Zone breezed to 62 for two at stumps.

At the Agriculture College ground, Central Zone posted a respectable score of 264 in its first innings against North Zone.

In reply, North was in a spot of bother ending the day at 30 for two.

The scores:

Central Zone 264 in 79 overs,(K. Akhil 45, Vinoop 35, Mohammed Ashik three for 45) vs North Zone 30 for two in nine overs.

KCA XI 171 in 77 overs (Ajayakumar 59, Akshay Kodoth 40, Sreeraj five for 27) vs South Zone 62 for two in 12 overs.

Sankari excels

Sankari's all-round performance enabled Thrissur to squeeze out a seven-run win over Palakkad in the Central Zone junior women's cricket tournament at the St. George HSS ground, Idukki, Friday.

Batting first, Thrissur, aided by Sankari's unbeaten 39, made 114 for seven in its allotted 25 overs. Palakkad fell eight runs short as Suhrudha (four for 32) and Sankari (three for 22) did the star turn with the ball.

In another match, Ernakulam crushed host Idukki by 57 runs.

Thrissur 114 for seven in 25 overs (Sankari 39 n.o., Manju three for nine) bt Palakkad 107 in 19 overs (Suhrudha four for 32, Sankari three for 22).

Ernakulam 124 for nine in 20 oers (Sofia 35, Mariya Benny four for 30) bt Idukki 67 in 20 overs.

Jincy does well

Kollam rode on Jincy's unbeaten half-century (71 not out) to chalk out an impressive 138-run win over Pathanamthitta in the South Zone junior women's cricket tournament at the DB College ground, Sasthamcotta, on Friday.

In another match, Thiruvananthapuram crushed Alappuzha by 60 runs.

Both Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram secured five points each for their victories.

The scores: Thiruvananthapuram 118 in 25 overs bt Alappuzha 58 for six in 25 overs.

Kollam 196 in 20 overs (Jincy 71 n.o.) bt Pathanamthitta 58 in 20 overs (Anju Shajan three for 11).
