: For Sreenith Mohan, the battle is against himself. Long after the rest of the field had called it a day, the 17-year-old high jumper from the KCA Mission Gold scheme was pushing the bar higher through big margins.

As the others vanished after 1.85m, Sreenith won the under-18 boys’ gold comfortably with a 2.06m effort, breaking his own one-year-old meet record at the 56th Kerala State junior athletics championship at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Friday.

But he was not satisfied. The National junior inter-zone record-holder then attempted to clear 2.12m in an effort to better his personal best. But he failed in all his attempts.

“I’ll try to break 2.15 at the coming Junior Nationals in Lucknow,” said the youngster, coached by T.P. Ouseph.

Maiden gold

Kottayam’s Dibi Sebastian was pushed to a new high by Palakkad’s T.C. Chesma in the under-16 girls’ section. In the end, Dibi — who gave up sprints after an unsuccessful series and moved to high jump just a year ago — won her maiden State junior gold with a record and personal best while Chesma also went over the meet mark.

Meanwhile, Kozhikode’s Jessy Joseph, from the Usha School of Athletics, broke the nine-year-old State record by nearly four seconds with a dominating run in the under-18 girls’ 800m. Well, in Jessy’s case, the record did not surprise anybody.
