Sportspersons presented with prizes

A total of 690 sportspersons were presented with cash prizes and trophies at the Chief Minister’s Trophy awards function at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), Nehru Indoor Stadium, here on Thursday.

On Tuesday, J. Jayalalithaa, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, had given away cash awards and trophies to 20 victorious captains (men and women) of the State-level competition.

Prize money of Rs. 1 lakh (first place), Rs. 75,000 (second place), and Rs. 25,000 (third place) was awarded to each sportsperson in various disciplines such as athletics, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, kabaddi, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, and tennis. Each member of the basketball, football, hockey, kabaddi, and volleyball teams that finished fourth received Rs. 10,000.

Vaigai Selvan, Minister for School Education, Sports and Youth Welfare, Tamil Nadu, who gave away the prizes, spoke about the importance of sport in character-building.

“Sportspersons bear all the traits of successful human beings.

They are the real heroes who keep persevering despite setbacks through injuries and failures.”

He also gave away cash prizes to 270 sportspersons who won medals at the School Games Federation of India competition. Md. Nasimuddin, Principal Secretary to Government, Youth Welfare and Sports Development, urged the athletes to make use of the government’s schemes. K. Rajaraman, Member Secretary, SDAT, and V. Mary Rajathy, General Manager, SDAT, also spoke on the occasion.
