Short-handed five-time champion Spain crashed out of the Davis Cup on Sunday when Canada completed a famous World Group triumph while 32-time winners United States edged Brazil in a dogfight.

Milos Raonic secured the crucial winning point in Canada’s 3-2 victory in Vancouver by beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to send Canada into its first Davis Cup quarterfinal. It will tackle Italy in April for a place in the semifinals.

Tomas Berdych beat Stanislas Wawrinka in a battle of Davis Cup ironmen as defending champions Czech Republic reached the quarterfinals.

The Czech Republic will now travel to Kazakhstan in April for the quarterfinals.

In Turin, Italy beat Croatia to make the quarterfinals for the first time since 1998.

The other quarterfinal will see Argentina facing France after it completed comfortable victories over Germany and Israel respectively.

At Vancouver: Canada 3 bt Spain 2 (Milos Raonic bt Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, Albert Ramos bt Frank Dancevic 7-5, 6-4).

At Turin: Italy 3 bt Croatia 2 (Marin Cilic bt Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-3, 7-5, Fabio Fognini bt Ivan Dodig 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4).

At Charleroi: Belgium 2 lost to Serbia 3 (David Goffin bt Boris Pashanski 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, Steve Darcis bt Nenad Zimonjic 6-2, 6-4).

At Jacksonville: USA 3 bt Brazil 2 (Thomaz Bellucci bt John Isner 2-6, 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-3, Sam Querrey bt Thiago Alves 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3)).

At Rouen: France 5 bt Israel 0 (Michael Llodra bt Noam Okun 6-3, 7-6(5), Richard Gasquet bt Amir Weintraub 6-4, 6-3).

At Buenos Aires: Argentina 5 bt Germany 0 (Juan Monaco bt Tobias Kamke 6-4, 7-6(2), Carlos Berlocq bt Christopher Kas 6-2, 6-4).

At Astana: Kazakhstan 3 bt Austria 1 (Andrey Golubev bt Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, Evgeny Korolev vs Andreas Haider-Maurer - not played).

At Geneva: Switzerland 2 lost to Czech Republic 3 (Tomas Berdych bt Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5), Henri Laaksonen bt Jiri Vesely 0-6, 6-3, 6-1). — AFP
