Bangalore: Shabbir Dhankot of Tamil Nadu seemed to reserve his best for the last as he pocketed the ARC Fourth Karnataka Tenpin Bowling Masters title at the Star City Bowling Centre here on Wednesday.
Not that Swapna Mitra of Karnataka, a surprise finalist posed much of a challenge in the final after having got past former National champion Vijay Punjabi and current National runner-up Girish Gaba in the earlier semifinals.
Shabbir won by 65 pins in the two games final with scores of 424 (213 and 211) for an average of 212 as against Swapna’s 359 (198 and 161 for an average of 179.5).
In a closely fought but low scoring first semifinal involving top ranked Dilbir Singh of West Bengal, Shabbir Dhankot and Srinath Pobbathi of Karnataka, Dilbir and Srinath did not find the mark in the first game to hand a lead of 36 and 23 pins respectively to Shabbir.
Although in the final game Srinath bowled a good game of 205, Shabbir managed to bowl 193 and win by 11 pins while Dilbir never found his mark to finish 53 pins behind the winner.
In the second semifinal pitting Vijay Punjabi, Girish Gaba and Swapna Mitra (all from Karnataka), it was Swapna, who surprised both Vijay Punjabi and Girish Gaba with a first game of 220, to take a lead of 14 and 59 pins respectively.
In the final game Vijay and Girish bowled poorly to hand over the match to Swapna to lose by 13 and 49 pins respectively.
