The World chess championship Candidates Tournament, to determine who would face Viswananathan Anand for this year’s World title, got off to a sedate start here on Friday, with all four games producing draw.

In the opening round, firm favourite and World No. 1 Magnus Carlson of Norway was held by Armenia’s Levon Aronian.

The results (first round): Levon Aronian (Arm) 0.5 drew with Magnus Carlsen (Nor) 0.5; Boris Gelfand (Isr) 0.5 drew with Teimour Radjabov (Aze) 0.5; Vasily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 0.5 drew with Alexander Grischuk (Rus) 0.5; Peter Svidler (Rus) 0.5 drew with Vladimir Kramnik (Rus) 0.5.
