  • Karthik gets his first International Master norm

NEW DELHI: Asian junior bronze medallist G. Rohit gave the crestfallen Indians something to cheer about when he completed his second Grandmaster norm in the `A2' category of the Aeroflot Open chess tournament in Moscow on Thursday.

In the ninth and final round, Rohit quickly drew with Russian GM Dmitry Frolynaov to reach six points.

This was Rohit's second GM norm this year. He had picked up his first norm on way to the runner-up spot in the Parsvnath International Open a month back.

Rohit's exploits came a day after Arun Karthik tied for the top spot with Azerbaijan's Vasif Durarbeyli at 7.5 points in `B' group and eventually took the second place due to inferior tiebreak score. This superlative performance gave Karthik his first International Master norm, more than $3,000 and 66 rating points.

However, on the final day, D. Harika's exceptional performance came to a sad end when she lost to Russian GM Vladimir Belov and missed her maiden GM norm by half a point.
