BANGALORE: It was Sanaa Bhambri’s day at the Questnet-ITF women’s tournament at the KSLTA courts here on Thursday. The feisty fifth seed, who had often been at the receiving end at the hands of Isha Lakhani, turned the tables in the battle of southpaws and won 6-2, 7-5 in 97 minutes to enter the semifinals.
Sanaa proved too good in the first set as she chased down every ball and slammed them hard past Isha who struggled to get going with her first serve.
Sanaa ran up a 5-0 lead before closing the set at 6-2. Isha came up with a much improved show in the second set, as she wiped out a 0-2 deficit to break her rival in the third game. She battled as hard she could, belting her groundstrokes with power and precision. The set seemed heading for a tie-break with the scoreline reading 5-5. But Sanaa held her serve for a 6-5 lead with a couple neat volleys and the pressure was back on Isha who mistimed two returns to drop the set and match.
Poojashree virtually walked into the semifinals after Treta Bhattacharya, who was nursing a sprained back, chose to concede after dropping the first set 0-6.
In the semifinals, Sanaa Bhambri will meet seventh-seeded Dalilia Jakupovic of Slovakia while Poojashree takes on the fourth seed, Keren Shlomo of Israel.
