NEW DELHI: In its last league match against Goa Football Association (under-21), Punjab Police struck thrice — including a brace by Rohit — in the last 15 minutes to register a 3-1 win in the fifth Lt. Governor’s invitational DDA football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Sunday.
The victory took Punjab Police’s tally to six points from four matches and gave the side a feeble chance to make it to the semifinals. The outcome of the last Group ‘B’ tie, between Indian National Football Club and Amity United, will decide the fate of the police team.
The start was not encouraging for Punjab Police as the young Goan side grabbed the lead in the eighth minute through Milagres Gonsalves, whose lob from top of the box beat the goalkeeper.
Sandeep Singh scored the equaliser in the 75th minute following which Rohit banked on precise crosses from Harpreet Singh to net two headers (79th and 86th) to put paid to the Goan team’s prospects.
In a Group ‘A’ engagement, J & K Bank and Indian Air Force (IAF) played a 2-2 draw. Saran Kumar (9th) and T.T. Stephen (74th) found the net for IAF while Satwinder Singh (40th and 44th) shot home for the bankmen.
J & K Bank finished its league engagements with 10 points to take the top spot in its group. IAF has five points from three matches and its last league encounter against Bhawanipore Club (Kolkata) on Monday will decide the other semifinalist from the group. — Sports Reporter
