BANGALORE: Goolihati D. Shekar, Minister for Textiles, Youth Services and Sports set the ball rolling for the upgradation of the Sree Kanteerava Stadium track and the relaying of the hockey stadium surface, here on Friday. The long pending projects finally got the ‘go ahead’ last week and this morning a simple ‘Bhoomi Puja’ ceremony marked the commencement of the relaying work.
While the Sree Kanteerava stadium will sport a new look with the base of the present surface too being redone, a 200 metre warm-up track is also coming up at the far end of the stadium which currently houses the archery area. Nearly Rs four crores will be borne by the State government for the athletics stadium, including the warm-up arena.
“Karnataka Athletic Association will bid for the 2011 Asian Track & Field championship as soon as the work is completed” said Satyanarayana, the KAA secretary.
The hockey turf will also see a new surface coming up at the cost of Rs 1.91 crores.
The work is expected to be complete in 90 days the certification from the authorised bodies will take another 30 days.
Bangalore can look forward to some international action in a few months’ time. — Special Correspondent
