Armed Police wins overall championship

Armed Police (125 points) won the overall championship in the 53rd inter-zonal police sports meet, which concluded here on Thursday. South Zone (62 points) finished second.

St. Mary’s HSS triumphs

St. Mary’s HSS defeated MSP HSS 4-1, via a tie-breaker, in the final of the district level inter-school boys’ football tournament for the Gopalakrishnan Memorial trophy at the SDAT stadium here on Thursday. In the girls’ section, Govt. Kallar HSS super senior team finished with nine points from three matches to win the Kaveriammal Memorial trophy, while Govt. Kallar HSS senior team finished runner-up.

The result (final): Boys: St. Mary’s HSS 4 (Ramalingam, David, Raja Hariharan, Prabhakaran) bt MSP HSS 1 (Gopinath) via tie-breaker ( FT: 0-0).

FIDE-rated chess

The Tamil Nadu State FIDE-rated chess championship for the V.J. Brahmaiah Rolling Shield will be organised by Nagapattinam District Association at G. Subramania Pathar Thirumana Mahal, Nanayakkara Street, Nagapattinam from August 1 to 7. The total prize money is Rs. 1,00,100. All registered players of TNSCA are eligible to participate.

Chess tourney

Sivakasi Chess Club will organise the Virudhunagar District under-8, 11 & 17 championships, for boys and girls, at Kamarajar Matric Junior School, near Water Tank, Sivakasi, on July 21. The last date for entries is July 20. Call R. Anantharam at 9443155852).

Selection trials

The Villupuram DCA will conduct trials on July 21 (9 a.m.) to select the district under-25 team for the TNCA inter-district tournament. The venue is the Arignar Anna Arts College ground. This is open to players born on or after 1.9.1988. Relevant age proof certificate is required.

Volleyball tourney

American College will conduct the N. Muthiah Ambalam memorial twentieth State-level inter-collegiate flood-lit volleyball tournament from August 7 to 9 at the American College grounds.
