win titles

A.S.S. Siril Verma of Glendale Academy and K. Vaishnavi won the boys’ and girls’ singles titles respectively in the IBL Shuttle Express schools badminton event here on Thursday.

In the boys’ final, Siril defeated K. Tarun Kumar (BVBPS) 21-6, 21-6, while Vaishnavi got the better of Prashi Joshi of Chirec 21-19, 21-18.

The results: Boys: Final: A. S. S. Siril Verma (Glendale) bt K. Tarun Kumar (BVBPS) 21-6, 21-6. Semifinals: A.S. S. Siril Verma (Glendale) bt Ganesh Chandra (DAV KP) 15-6,15-4; K. Tarun Kumar (BVBPS) bt Sudesh Venkat (DAV KP) 15-8, 15-7.

Girls: Final: K. Vaishnavi (BSRV) bt Prashi Joshi (Chirec) 21-19, 21-18. Semifinals: Prashi Joshi (Chirec) bt Shruti Shree Kumar (Model Mission HS) 15-4, 15-2; K. Vaishnavi (BSRV) bt Dristi Dochania (Chirec) 15-2, 15-2.

Laxman to

start academy

Former India International V.V.S. Laxman on Thursday said that he was planning to start an academy at Hyderabad soon, according to information reaching here on Thursday.

Laxman, who made a flying visit to Rural Development Trust at Anantapur to take a look at the cricketing facilities, said that proper coaching was the need of the hour.

“I heard about the cricketing facilities at RDT through media and fellow cricketers. I could not play a match here. The facilities are impressive on par with international standards,” he added.

Laxman, along with RDT director Moncho Ferrer, visited the grounds, nets and accommodation for the players and interacted with the district administrators.

FIDE chess tournament

The all-India FIDE-rating chess tournament for below 2000 rating players and unrated players will be held at DRRMC indoor stadium here from July 31 to August 3. The four-day tournament, with a total prize money of Rs. 1.40 lakhs, will witness around 150 players from all over the country.

“We have already received entries from Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka,” said Krishna District Chess Association secretary D. Srihari here on Thursday. The tournament, jointly organised by Jithendra Chess Academy and KDCA, will be played in the Swiss system with nine rounds. For more details, contact Srihari at 9440119775 / Naresh at 9493501506.

West Godavari defeated Guntur by 73 runs while the match between Prakasam and Krishna could not take place owing to rain in the ACA Central Zone under-19 women inter-district tournament at ACA Women’s Academy at Guntur on Thursday.

The scores: West Godavari 135 for seven in 30 overs (A. Satyaveni 38) bt Guntur 62 in 20.3 overs (Jhansi Lakshmi 29, P. Sri Lekha four for six, G. Navya Durga three for five).
