NEW DELHI: Second seed Pathanjali Ravishankar outwitted Cheong-Eui Kim of Korea 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the ITF Satellite tennis circuit first leg at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.
The 24-year-old Ravishankar, who has not played a tournament after making the quarterfinals of a Futures event in Thailand in June, served big especially in the second set to outplay the Korean.
In the long-drawn sixth game of the second set, Ravishankar converted his sixth game point, after having saved a breakpoint, to gain a 4-2 lead. The Chennai lad fired five aces, all in the second set. He will meet the winner of the qualifier between Chin-Yu Huang of Chinese Taipei and Punna Vishal.
Ashutosh posts win
Ashutosh Singh beat his erstwhile doubles partner Gurmehar Singh in straight sets as the latter simplified the job with 15 double faults and Tushar Liberhan did his confidence a world of good with a fluent triumph over Arjun Goutham.
Aditya Madkekar quelled a late challenge from Jaco Mathew, who was returning from an injury lay-off, while the fifth-seeded Divij Sharan bit the dust, owing to his defensive tactics, against the former Asian junior champion, Tai-Wei Liu of Chinese Taipei.
In an entertaining doubles first round, Aqeel Khan of Pakistan combined well with Punna Vishal, with the odd exception of a fierce clash of racquets, to oust the top seeds Vijay Kannan and Ashutosh Singh in straight sets.
