MARGAO: Mohammed Rafi and Murritala Ali scored two goals each to guide Mahindra United to a convincing 4-1 win over defending champion Churchill Brothers in the 14th round of the I-League football tournament here on Wednesday.
The victory in the match played at Nehru Stadium at Fatorda here propelled Mahindra to the second spot with 25 points from 14 matches.
It is now behind table-topper Dempo Sports Club, which has 26 points from 13 matches.
Mahindra, which led 1-0 at half-time, scored through Rafi (16th & 70th) and Ali (56th and injury time) to post a comfortable win over its formidable rival.
Churchill looked largely off-colour and failed to play cohesively. Although it created a couple of early scoring chances, it was unable to capitalise on it.
Mahindra earned a penalty in the 16th minute when Sushant Mathew was brought down by Rowilson Rodrigues after both went to tap an aerial ball inside the box. Rafi, who took the spot kick, made no mistake and Mahindra opened its account.
Mahindra raised its game in the second half and put pressure on the rival's defence. It earned another penalty in the 56th minute when Ali was brought down inside the box by Churchill defender Dhanachandra Singh.
Ali, who took the kick, scored the second goal after 'keeper Arindam Bhattacharya blocked the shot but could not stop the ball rolling into the net. — PTI
