New Delhi: President of India Pratibha Patil will receive the 2010 Games Baton from Queen Elizabeth II in London on October 29 before it begins its journey to New Delhi travelling through 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.
“On October 29, 2009, one month from now, at Buckingham place, Queen Elizabeth will be handing over the Queen’s Baton to President of India,” Home Secretary G.K. Pillai told reporters here.
He said, there after the ‘baton’ will travel 1,70,000 km, crossing all the participating nations before it reaches Delhi.
Pillai said it is a very special baton which has not only GPS and other systems in place but also its flag changes colours as it runs through each country.
“This is one of the engineering marvels of the baton,” he said.
Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra will become the first baton bearer of the Queen’s Baton Relay which will take 240 days to complete the epic journey to all member nations. — PTI
