R. Preeth Kumar completed a clinical 6-1, 6-2 victory over T. Deventher in the boys’ under-14 singles final of the Rajagiri Rubber KTC State-ranking junior tennis tournament at the Krishnan Tennis Centre, here on Saturday.
In the girls’ final, Aarthi Murali defeated second-seeded Jina Park 6-1, 6-1.
The boys’ summit clash saw Preeth, seeded second, seize control from the third game, when he broke Deventher’s serve. Preeth went on to register breaks in the fifth and seventh games and clinched the set. A sound service game backed up by powerful strokes helped his cause — the single-handed backhand being executed to good effect. In long rallies, Preeth’s defensive play, relentless in character, gave him a definite edge.
Deventher’s game, on the other hand, was hampered by inconsistency. He began the second set with promising, gaining two break points in the first game. But Preeth retained his composure to take it to deuce.
A rally at that stage — with some fine lobs and dogged retrieving — was the standout feature of the match. Preeth eventually nailed the game before he and Deventher traded breaks in the second and third.
Deventher held serve to make it 2-2 but it turned out to be the last game he would win in the afternoon. Preeth polished off the remaining games with ease and sealed the contest.
K. Suresh, Executive Director, A.V. Thomas Group Companies, gave away the prizes.
