Indian girls, spearheaded by Y. Pranjala will retain attention in the ITF grade-2 junior tennis that begins here on Monday.
The 14-year-old Pranjala had won the under-18 tournament in Chandigarh on Saturday, but will have to grapple with a quality field, despite being the top seed, ranked 120 in the world.
In the absence of Snehadevi Reddy and Simran Kaur Sethi, who are gearing up for the Australian Open junior event, the other Indian girls, Dhruthi Venugopal, Vasanti Shinde, Karman Kaur Thandi and Vanshika Sawhney will try to assert their class and calibre. Vanshika will have the uneviable task of fighting the second-seeded Shao Yijia of China in the first round. While there are 13 Indian girls in the main draw, the boys’ field has only six Indians. Four had got the wild card, one made the cut as a lucky loser, while Garvit Batra alone made it directly and was seeded fifth. With the 44th ranked Sumit Nagal away, getting ready for the Australian Open junior event, the Indian boys have their task cut out.
