KOCHI: The 59th Pooja all-India cricket tournament, organised by the Tripunithura Cricket Club, begins at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Saturday. The tournament will be held in two phases with the first leg being a qualifying round for the main phase.
Twenty-one teams will figure in the first phase and the winner will progress to the main event. BPCL Kochi Refinery, Muthoot ECC (both Ernakulam), Jolly Rovers (Perinthalmanna), Cycle Brand Kids (Thiruvananthapuram) and host Maruthi Homes TCC are some the teams which will figure in the first phase which concludes on October 3.
T.N. Ananthanarayanan, Joint Secretary of the Kerala Cricket Association, will inaugurate the tournament.
South Zone taekwondo begins today
The South Zone taekwondo championship opens at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium in Kozhikode on Friday. Competitions will be held in the senior, junior and sub-junior categories. The meet concludes on Sunday.
North Zone’s Sunil Thomas with 77 and South’s Jeevan and Jaison, with three wickets each, hogged the limelight on the opening day of their three-dayer in the Kerala State under-22 inter-zone cricket championship at the Fort Ground, Palakkad on Thursday.
The scores: North 237 in 53.2 overs (C.P. Rizwan 49, Sunil Thomas 77, Anfal 57, Jeevan three for 29, Jaison three for 18) v South Zone 43 for one in 12 overs.
The trials to select the Ernakulam District under-16 cricket team will be held at the Tripunithura Palace Oval at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday.
Interested players, born on or after September 1, 1993, are to report at the venue in proper cricket gear and with their own kits.

John de Britto School advances
St. John de Britto School, Fort Kochi, defeated St. Joseph’s ‘B’ (Pachalam) 2-0 and entered the quarterfinals of the Dhyan Chand inter-school hockey tournament at the St. Albert’s College Ground, Kaloor, on Thursday.
Vidyodaya (Thevakkal), Seventh Day (Kaloor), SN HS (Thrikkanarvattom) and St. Joseph’s ‘A’ (Pachalam) also made the last-eight grade.
