P.K.R. Arts College (Gobichettipalayam) defeated Panimalar Engineering College in a thrilling five-set final to clinch the women’s title at the senior State volleyball championship here on Wednesday. PKR squandered five match points in the deciding set before winning 25-15, 19-25, 24-26, 25-22, 18-16.

In the first set, PKR ran out a comfortable victor. Though Panimalar captain P. Narmadha unleashed a few powerful smashes, she could not prevent her side losing the first set 15-25.

In the second, Narmadha led from the front as the side pulled level by taking the set 25-19. Ably supported by R. Mythili, the Chennai side went ahead 8-0 in the third before PKR shot back into contention. It was a neck-and-neck affair before Panimalar clinched it on the fifth set point.

Down two sets to one, PKR needed a big boost.

That was provided by libero K.S. Navya, who successfully found a way to retrieve the opposition’s smashes, which had until then seemed tough to handle. It won the set 25-22 and carried the momentum into the decider, going up 8-2 and 14-11.

This time, it was Panimalar’s turn to claw its way back to make it 14-14, but the effort proved futile in the end.

The results: Women: Final: P.K.R. Arts College (Gobichettipalayam) bt Panimalar Engg. College 25-15, 19-25, 24-26, 25-22, 18-16.
