: With a further 21 events completed on the second day of the 56th State schools athletics meet at the University stadium here on Wednesday, Palakkad continued to hold pole position in the overall points tally by adding a further 46 points to its overnight total of 69.

Palakkad, after the completion of 37 out of a total of 95 events, had a tally of 115 points with 11 golds, 19 silver and four bronze medals. Ernakulam, which lay a poor second with 29 points, did considerably well to close the gap with a strong showing, aided by the athletes of St. George HSS, Kothamangalam and finished the day with 88 points.

The overall haul at the end of the day was 10 golds, nine silver and 11 bronze medals. Kozhikode moved into the third position with 29 points (five golds and four bronze medals) ahead of Thiruvananthapuram (25).

HS Parli on top

In the Best School category, HS Parli, Palakkad remained at the top spot with 52 points ahead of Kothamangalam giants St. George (40) and Mar Basil HSS (36).

HS Mundur, also from Palakkad, was fourth with 27 points while AMHS, Poovambayi (which is represented mostly by athletes of the Usha School of Athletics) and Kalladi HS, Kumaramputhur (Palakkad) stood fifth and sixth with 20 and 19 points respectively.

With two days to go and a total of 58 events yet to be decided, the race for top honours in the overall and Best School categories thus seem poised for an exciting finale.
