Palakkad men registered a 61-38 win over Idukki in Group ‘C' and topped the group to qualify for the quarterfinals in the State senior basketball championship at the GBHSS floodlit stadium on Wednesday.
Idukki faded away after a promising start against Palakkad which is the Kerala Police team.
A tight contest appeared to be on cards when Idukki led at the end of the first quarter but the gap between the two sides was evident in the manner in which Palakkad came back in the second quarter. With clever passing and deception, Palakkad scored heavily in the second quarter to take the match away from Idukki whose game wilted under pressure.
Former champion Thiruvananthapuram overcame a fighting Alappuzha 38-22 to begin its campaign on a high note in women's section.
Thiruvananthapuram was poor with its shooting and rebound collection and it allowed Alappuzha to stay abreast with its rivals in the first two quarters. But Thiruvananthapuram showed a marked improvement in its game especially in shooting after the break. Both Stephy Nixon and Merlin Baby began asserting themselves with their rebound conversion in the second half as Thiruvananthapuram surged ahead.
Kottyam girls made short work of Kasaragod 31-19 in Group ‘D’. The makeshift team of school girls found the taller Kottayam girls a tough nut to crack. After failing to breach the zonal defence of Kottyam, the Kasargod girls tried long range shooting which left a lot to be desired.
There was no effort to collect the rebound as well. Kottayam played at half-pace, preserving its energy for tougher matches, but it was still enough to beat Kasaragod.
