: Mohun Bagan registered its first win of the I-League after downing ONGC FC 3-1 in a 19th-round encounter at Kalyani Stadium on Friday.
Australian Tolgay Ozbey played a major role in Bagan’s first win after it was docked all points from the first 10 rounds as a penalty for abandoning a match. Nigerian striker Okolie Odafa, returning after a three-match suspension, and Jewel Raja also got on the score sheet for the host.
ONGC, which was unbeaten in the last eight matches, suffered its first reverse since coach Santosh Kashyap took over. ONGC’s consolation goal came from substitute Sorabuddin Mollick late in the second half.
Bagan began on a breezy note and found the lead in the 10th minute. Odafa’s measured chip inside the box saw Ozbey unleash a rasping volley that found the back of the net. Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul pulled off two fine saves to deny Jatin Singh Bisht and Eric Brown.
Bagan doubled the lead in the 63rd minute when Jewel Raja found the net after a fumble in the ONGC box. Defender Bimal Minz’s poor clearance off Ozbey’s cross saw Jewel Raja finding the net with an angular shot.
Odafa took the game beyond ONGC’s grasp in the 72nd minute when he scored on a fine solo effort.
ONGC — which missed another opportunity in the 80th minute when Paul brilliantly saved a free-kick from Brown — finally pulled one back as Mollick scored off a rebound after Brown’s effort was saved by Paul.
Mohun Bagan tallies five points from 14 matches, while ONGC is on 21 after 18 outings.
