Shillong: New recruit Emmanuel Okoro scored the all-important goal as JCT edged out Shillong Lajong FC in an ONGC-I-League encounter here on Wednesday.
JCT custodian and Man-of-the-match Karanjit Singh thwarted a number of attempts by the home side to give his team its second win of the season.
After a barren first half which Lajong dominated, unchecked Okoro headed a cross from substitute Jaswinder Singh in the 74th minute to score the winner.
Lajong missed at least five chances with new Nigerian recruit Kelechi Okoye wasting two.
In the 17th minute of the game, Karanjit Singh saved the shot taken by Okoye from a touchline throw by Seikhohau Tuboi and cleared the ball from near the goalmouth.
It was in the 23rd minute that JCT tested Lajong custodian Gumpe Rime when Lalchhuanmawia took the free-kick which Narinder Singh headed but the alert Lajong keeper saved it well.
Karanjit, in the 38th minute, made a brilliant diving save off a powerful shot taken by Niwan O Gatphoh from 24 yards out. JCT also missed at least two open chances.
At the post-match press conference, Lajong coach Stanley Rosario admitted his boys missed a number of chances that led to the defeat. “We are having a big problem with the conversion rates.
“They boys have also struggled because of the poor ground condition which led to abnormal bouncing of the ball,” he said. — PTI
