The two-day national seminar on sports psychology was inaugurated by Kerala State Sports Council President Padmini Thomas at the LNCPE conference hall here on Monday.
Padmini Thomas stressed the need for sports psychology in the development of a successful sportsperson. She said that sportspersons should be guided properly to overcome the stress they undergo while training and in competition. She said that a sports psychologist could help a sportsperson overcome the self doubts that naturally creep in when he returns to competition after a layoff forced by injury.
Professor Tony Morris from Victoria University, Australia, who is the chief resource person at the workshop, said that sports psychology was a key area which India should concentrate on especially when it was striving more and more to become a leading nation in a wider range of sports.
Though India had been successful at the global stage in some particular sports in the recent times, he said there had been an expansion in a range of activities and there was a need to prepare the sportspersons to give their optimal performance at global stage. He said sportspersons should not be put under hardship or any kind of pressure that would have a negative impact on their performance. He said that sports should be an enjoyable experience for sportspersons and they should stay healthy and happy to achieve their goals.
The LNCPE principal G. Kishore welcomed the gathering. Later in the evening, Tony Morris held a brief inter-active session with the Kerala Santosh Trophy football team. — Principal Correspondent
