Chennai: Madras Club’s Naveen clinched the singles title at the Turbo Energy-KTC markers’ tennis tournament, beating Gandhinagar Club’s Kailash in straight sets in Sunday’s final.
Naveen, who was runner-up last year, broke Kailash in the third and fifth games to take a 4-1 lead.
Kailash broke back in the next game, twice forcing Naveen into failed half-volleys by directing the ball at his feet as he rushed the net. But that was the extent of Kailash’s fightback, as Naveen held his next two service games to close it out 6-4.
Naveen broke Kailash’s serve in the first game of the second set, a particularly erratic game for the latter. After that, Naveen breezed through his service games, pounding Kailash’s backhand with bouncy top-spun serves, fully exploiting the latter’s tendency to float his backhand returns. Serving for the match at 5-4, Naveen took the game to love, ending fittingly by killing a weak return with a volley down the middle.
R. Ramanujam, Chairman, Turbo Energy Ltd., gave away the prizes.
The result: Singles (final): Naveen (Madras Club) bt Kailash (Gandhinagar) 6-4, 6-4.
