M. Naveen of Cuddalore and R. Karan Rajan of Chennai entered the boys' under-17 semifinals of the AMA India Groups State-ranking junior badminton tournament at the Officers Club courts here on Saturday.

While Naveen scored a hard-fought 21-13, 24-26, 21-18 win over H. Mithilesh of Salem, Karan defeated R.N. Harshan 21-15, 20-22, 21-18.

Little Masters posts win

V. Gowtham and M. Nishanth chipped in with half-centuries as Little Masters CC defeated Sterling Biotech CC by 38 runs in the TNCA-NDCA third division league, for the NDCA Trophy, at the Laidlaw Memorial School grounds at Udhagamandalam on Saturday.

Easy for MEG

Defending champion MEG (Bangalore) scripted a 5-1 win over Southern Railway (Chennai) and advanced to the final of the K.R. Educational Institutions-Lakshmi Ammal Memorial all-India hockey tournament at Kovilpatti on Saturday.

Ganesh Kumar (3), Muthanna (1) and Suresh (1) scored for the winner, while Vinoth netted for Southern Railway.

Chennai to meet Tirunelveli in final

Chennai and Tirunelveli entered the final of the senior State football championship at Sivanthipuram (Tirunelveli district) on Saturday.

Chennai, which edged out Cuddalore 2-1, opened the account in the 24th minute through Williams.

David increased the lead just before half-time. Edwin reduced the margin in the second half.

In the other semifinal, Tirunelveli defeated Madurai 7-6 through penalty shootout. The teams were locked 2-2 at regulation time.

Praveen Raja gave Tirunelveli the lead in the 23rd minute, but John Abeeth equalised soon. Muniraj put Madurai ahead after the break. However, James levelled the score in the 74th minute.

In the shootout, Gnanaraj, Dhanapalan, Senthilraj, Rubin, Millan, Moses and Joel netted for Tirunelveli, while Muniraj, Navamurthy, Velmurugan, Antony Arulsamy, Ajeesh and Ganesh Prabhu were the scorers for Madurai.
