The National-ranking table tennis championship (East Zone) was opened by the State sports minister, Madan Mitra, at the Kabiguru Stadium in Bolpur near here on Tuesday.
Over 600 players are taking part in the six-day tournament which will offer a prize fund of Rs. 6 lakh. The West Bengal Table Tennis Association organised meet will see all the top notch Indian players participating in the championship which follows the Inter-institutional championship which concluded at Burnpur on Monday.
Impressed by the Stadium, the sports minister, in his speech, promised Rs. 10 lakh for upgrading the Stadium including installing an air condition system. Association president and former speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, was among many who attended the programme.
The day also saw competition in cadet boys and girls section where all the seeded players advanced easily.
Mitra passes away
Former Ranji panel umpire Rathindranath Mitra breathed his last on Tuesday. He was 71. Mitra was not only a good sportsman but also an amiable person.
