Some top weightlifters of the country will be seen in action in the National weightlifting championship, starting at the SRM University campus here from Sunday. Ace woman lifter N. Soniya Chanu, who represented the country in the London Olympics, will be the main attraction of the event concluding on January 10.
However, K. Ravi Kumar, who also participated in last year’s Olympics, will not feature in the championship due to fitness issues. “Ravi has a muscle pull. So, he will not take part in the event,” said competition director Pal Singh Sandhu on Saturday.
More than 300 lifters from 33 units are expected to compete in the event. “Lifters who do well in the Nationals have a good chance to be in the reckoning for important upcoming assignments like the World, Commonwealth and Asian championships,” said Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) Secretary General Sahdev Yadav.
