CHENNAI: The Canara Bank under-15 National sub-junior boys & girls chess championship will begin on October 2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.

Entries have been received from 19 States, and 140 boys and 91 girls. Announcing this at a press conference here, Manuel Aaron, General Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, said that the tournament had a rich tradition with past winners including Viswanathan Anand, Dibyendu Barua, P. Harikrishna, S. Vijayalakshmi and Koneru Humpy.

“The top three players in each section qualify for the Asian and World under-16 championship in 2008,” Aaron said. The tournament is a 11-round affair and will be played in the Swiss format.

The total prize money is Rs. 1, 35,000; the first prize for boys is Rs. 15,000 while it is Rs. 12,000 for girls. Free food and lodging will be provided for all players.
