Tuticorin: Muthoot Group Volleyball Club, Kerala, which upset the applecart of ONGC in the first match and gave a fright to IOB, Chennai, before going down, went one step further to derail Southern Railway 25-21, 28-26, 25-22 for its
second win in three matches in the Vedanta National League for volleyball championship (Preliminary III) for Sterlite Trophy here on Friday.
For the winner, Shamji Thomas and Najeeb were the outstanding spikers. Abilash and Binesh gave them good support in spiking and blocking also. They relied mostly on gentle drops rather heavy smashes. Experinced Railway men, though played at their best, could not cope with the youngsters and it was really youth prevailing over experience.
Muthoot was off to a rousing start to lead 14-4 in the first set. Railway players settled by this time and Sivarajan, serving well, narrowed the lead to 11-15. However Muthoot maintained the lead and clinched the set.
The second set saw the score going neck-to-neck till Railway leading 24-22 but James John faltered twice to surrender the lead and finally the team from Kerala took the set 28-26.
In the third set, Railway fought well till mid way but thereafter played badly to lose the set and match.
