Vinayak Mane comes good with the bat

JAIPUR: Effectively, the Premier Cup final ceased to be a contest in the 21st over of Rajasthan's chase. Needing 288 to win, Rajasthan's top-five batsmen were back in the pavilion with only 85 on the board.

Once in control, Mumbai did not mind the desperate slogging and cruised to a 72-run victory at the floodlit Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on Wednesday.

After the early fall of Rajasthan opener Siddharth Joshi, the pair of Rohit G. Sharma and Ashu Jain did raise visions of a counter-attack by scoring 56 runs off 60 deliveries.

Early wickets

However, Mumbai's Nilesh Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar not only struck in their first overs. The fall of four wickets for 26 runs in the space of 10 overs truly broke Rajasthan's back. But the host's resistance ended only in the 47th over.

Earlier, Mumbai, put in, progressed on Vinayak Mane's 86 and the sixth wicket stand of 54 runs off just 33 deliveries between skipper Amol Muzumdar and Abhishek Nayar to reach a formidable total.

After Ajinkya Rahane, Wasim Jaffer and Powar promised more but delivered less, Mane and Rohit Sharma raised 91 runs and put Mumbai in command. Mane, who hit six boundaries, fell in his attempt to hoist a six.
