CHENNAI: Karun Chandhok finished just out of the points in the feature race in the opening round of the GP2 Series in Barcelona on Saturday, and was eliminated from Sunday’s sprint race after a number of collisions damaged his steering.
Having qualified seventh, the 24-year-old from Chennai finished ninth in the feature race.
Chandhok started well, moving immediately to fifth and taking fourth by overtaking Adrian Valles at the first corner. But, the introduction of the safety car resulted in the cars entering the pits together, forcing Chandhok to wait behind Bruno Senna.
“You have to stop under the safety car, because if I’d stayed out I’d have lost more time,” said Chandhok.
“The mechanics did a great job but after the delay waiting for Senna to finish his pit stop, my good work in the opening lap was ruined.”
Chandhok, who rejoined in ninth, couldn’t take the eighth place from Kamui Kobayashi.
In the sprint race, a collision in the first lap forced him to the back of the pack. Although he made progress and matched the pace of the leaders, he made contact with Yelmer Buurman, damaged his steering and retired. Chandhok’s next race is the second round of the GP2 series in Turkey on May 10 and 11.
