CHENNAI: The first round of the six-leg JK Tyre Racing Cup got off to a flying start under cloudy and pleasant conditions on Saturday. Ajay Kini won both races in the Formula Maruti category, while P.V. Bharat clinched the double in the Formula Esteem category.
With 28 competitors from all over the country in the fray, the event saw a record number of entries for the Formula Maruti category.
Saturday's races had drivers from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, Kolkata and Tamil Nadu in action.
The second leg of the event a joint effort by JK Tyres and Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) to benefit newcomers and juniors to gain entry into the world of motorsports will be held at the MMST track in Irrungattukottai on Sunday at 3 p.m. Entry for the public is free.
The promoters are confident that many of the drivers will graduate to the highest level of racing.
The finds of this championship are expected to give the experienced drivers a run for their money in the forthcoming JK Tyre National Road Racing Championship to be held later this year.
