The 25th State age-group chess championship, organised by the Bengal Chess Association, got off to a start here on Saturday. Mitrabha Guha (U-13 boys) and Khushi Dharewa and Arpita Mukherjee (both U-13 girls) won both the rounds to lead their respective fields with two points.

As many as 502 players in the under-7, 9, 11 and 13 in both boys and girls are competing in this tournament.

Some intriguing battles were seen in the the U-13 girls’ category. Top seed Khushi and second seed Arpita won both rounds against Tania Acharya and Shinjini respectively. The battle between Arpita and Shinjini lasted little over three hours.

Little known Sayanika Mallick upset third seed Angira in the second round.

Jr. State badminton

The SAIL-Abasan Cultural & Athletic Association under Burdwan District Badminton Association will organise the West Bengal junior State-ranking badminton tournament at the Indoor Hall from March 18 to 23. Players from all over the State including the ranked players will participate.

Pailan Bankim Cup

Kola Union High School defeated Chandmari DS by a solitary goal while Ashoknagar Vidyasagar BBHS outplayed Basudevpur Palli HHS 5-0 in the Pailan Bankim Cup here on Saturday.
