Mahatma Gandhi University (Kottayam) was the only top women’s team from last year to survive a wave of upsets that was witnessed in the South Zone inter-university badminton championships that concluded at the JNTU-Kakinada indoor stadium here on Saturday.

While MGU, which defeated Jain University in the final, retained its title, Cochin University of Science and Technology won the men’s crown.

Cochin UST defeated JNTU-Hyderabad 3-1 in the final after downing last year’s winner Osmania University (Hyderabad) 3-0 in the semifinals with two of the three matches going into deciding game.
