B. Prabhu and Bharath combined brilliantly to help MEG outclass Karnataka Volleyball Club (KVC) and win its first match in the fifth and final phase of the Karnataka Volley League (KVL) for the Smt. Rekha Muthappa Rai memorial trophy at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here on Friday.
MEG packed far too many guns for KVC and won with consummate ease at 25-17, 25-22, 25-16 in less than 44 minutes.
Even on Thursday night, MEG did give anxious moments to title favourite Jindal Steel Works (JSW), Bellary, winning the first two sets and led 17-14 in the third before crumbling under pressure and throwing it all away.
Today, however, the Sappers left nothing to chance and the attackers cane good to outplay the scratch combination of KVC. If Prabhu and Bharath smashed well from either flanks, Akhil and captain Jaleel too played important roles with some intelligent drops and fine blocks.
With senior pros international S.S. Ashoka and T.G. Shankar playing sparingly, the juniors in the assorted KVC did get an opportunity to showcase their talent but sadly could not raise their game and caved in tamely. The second match of the day between JSW and Postal was inexplicably delayed as Postal team and its coach turned up very late for the 5.30 p.m start.
Late on Thursday night, BSNL remained on course with a straight sets victory over KVC while JSW looked the team to beat after rallying well to outwit MEG.
The results: MEG bt KVC 25-17, 25-22, 25-16.
Thursday night: JSW bt MEG 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-7; BSNL bt KVC 26-24, 25-19, 25-23.
